VISIONCUT back-up is a winning way for investing Glossop Cartons

Glossop Cartons has taken delivery of a new BOBST VISIONCUT 106 LE die-cutter for its Glossop, Derbyshire plant. The family owned business chose the BOBST over other machines in the market because of its higher performance, useful production features, and the service support provided by BOBST in the UK. The company specified a very short delivery time to take advantage of impending road closures and, potentially, snow at their hill top site.

Jacky Sidebottom and the new VISIONCUT 106 LE

Jackie Sidebottom, Director of Glossop Cartons, said, “We constantly look at new equipment to see what it can bring to our business. We have reached the point where we need to update and upgrade our die-cutting technology so that we can be more efficient and also to give us the extra capacity we need for our future acquisition plans. Replacing one of our die-cutters with the BOBST VISIONCUT 106 LE gives us both and it also brings us the advantage of its dynamic lateral register system”. The register system on the VISIONCUT 106 LE uses camera technology to identify the edge of the incoming sheet and brings it into perfect lateral register with the cutting tools. In particular, this avoids the register problems that traditional physical ‘side lay’ systems have when die-cutting litho-laminated materials. Jackie Sidebottom said, “The VISIONCUT doesn’t come cheap, but as well as the performance and quality benefits that it brings, you feel more secure installing a BOBST because of the excellent back-up service you get with them. That’s based on the experience with our existing BOBST die-cutter and with the BOBST EXPERTFOLD gluer we installed last year”. John Ardern, one of Bobst Group’s Product Specialists in the UK, said, “We have 20 Service Technicians and 6 Product Specialists located around the UK, as well as a ten strong technical support and spare parts team down in Redditch and an emergency out of hours parts service. BOBST customers in the UK and Ireland have access to all of this and they really do value it”. In December 2010 Glossop Cartons took delivery of a BOBST EXPERTFOLD gluer while Britain was gripped by the worst weather for fifty years. With snow covering the whole country, gaining access to the plant for the delivery truck meant gritting the steep road to the plant, digging out snow drifts, and moving abandoned cars. As a result of this experience, Glossop Cartons have been keen to install their new VISIONCUT before winter, and also to take advantage of a planned road closure near the plant that was scheduled to start in less than a week. Jackie Sidebottom said, “Getting a twenty ton machine into a factory that is located on a through road causes a fair bit of disruption, so we wanted to take advantage of the closure to get the machine in without stopping the traffic. BOBST pulled out all the stops when we explained our situation and they took a VISIONCUT out of their Redditch Training Centre for us so that we could have the machine less than a week from placing the order. That’s amazing service”.
